Winner of the 2019 Oscar for Best Picture, Green Book takes us on a concert road trip of the American Deep South in the 1960s with Don Shirley, a composer/pianist, and his driver. But this is an African-American musician and his driver a tough-talking Italian immigrant from the Bronx. The Green Book was real – it listed the hotels and restaurants that African-Americans could visit in the south at that time. And the film is based on a real story. Shirley, played by Mahershala Ali (House of Cards, The Hunger Games, Moonlight) is cultured and accomplished, but far from perfect, and his driver (Viggo Mortensen) is required to rescue him on occasions. This film shines a light on racial prejudice, as we enjoy superb performances, and great scenery and music.
