From German director Christian Petzold (Barbara) comes a ‘Kafka-esque Casablanca’ about refugees in the port of Marseilles deftly set in two eras: wartime 1940s and 2018. Georg, a German-born Parisian Jew escaping from the Nazis, arrives in Marseilles in 1942 carrying the documents of a writer – and must hide under his chosen role. Stuck in Marseilles, he finds himself at the centre of a love story with Marie (played by Paula Beer) who is searching for her husband. The dilemma of modern-day refugees stuck in transit provides the other time zone of this screenplay, based on the 1944 novel by Anna Segher as interpreted by Petzold. Georg, played by Franz Rogowski, assumes many roles through the course of an existentially layered story. In German with subtitles.
