The Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group is pleased to announce the next in our series of Shared History events: a seminar in Maleny to introduce the local Indigenous Elders from the Jinibara traditional custodians. Elders from the Jinibara First Nations people will be talking about their culture and history in the Hinterland and introducing Jason Murphy, an emerging artist and leader of the Jinibara people. The event is scheduled to be held in the Maleny Community Centre (main hall) on Wednesday 25th September 2019, 10.30am-1.30pm. Morning tea will be provided. We anticipate a good crowd, as the people of Maleny have shown a great deal of interest in Indigenous matters, including local identity Aunty Bev Hand’s cultural walks, the annual Bunya Dreaming Festival, and the Maleny Remembrance Ceremony. Uncle Noel Blair has been involved with the Mary Cairncross Biosphere Project and Woodfordia’s Indigenous programs. There is much to be leant about our country’s cultural past, and the Jinibara people have a wealth of stories to tell. We are anticipating a follow-up seminar early next year, to pursue in more depth ideas and questions raised in this seminar by local Maleny people.
